His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover everything he possibly could about the game. He would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative feedback from others kill his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

He began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning period and winning was not a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
