Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His papa introduced him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn everything he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the detrimental comments from others kill his ambition of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.

Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an undying love for the game of poker. He states that he is picking up skills every single day and is quite humble about his success. He knows he makes errors every single game of poker and always aspires to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.
